CRUISE SHIP CHARTERS TO ARTHURS PASS VILLAGE, FROM AKAROA
Please note that due to the schedule of the TranzAlpine Train, it is impossible to catch it. If you want to go on the train you will have to book the ship's excursion. The ship's agent charters a special train (not actually the TranzAlpine Train).
Join us on an unequalled scenic experience, travelling by road, deep into New Zealand's mighty Southern Alps, to the alpine village of Arthurs Pass.
The Southern Alps is a mountain range running approximately 450km along the length of New Zealand's South Island, and also includes many smaller ranges. Today we venture by road into the Southern Alps range known as the Main Divide, which forms the boundary between Canterbury and the West Coast regions of New Zealand.
Leaving Akaroa Wharf, we travel on the main highway over the volcanic Banks Peninsula, towards the patchwork fields that make up the Canterbury Plains.
|These vast expanses of flat land make up one of New Zealands agricultural heartlands, contributing to make New Zealands largest export earner. We pass fields neatly divided by shelterbelts, protecting freshly ploughed fields and cropping, sheep, cattle and dairy herds from the prevailing northwest winds, before reaching the foothills of the Southern Alps.|
Our vista is now dominated by the towering Southern Alps where we start our ascent through the high alpine Porters Pass.
Once through the pass we travel alongside deep subalpine lakes as we continue winding our way past towering shingle covered slopes, tussock and rock formations.
We cross the mighty braided Waimakariri River, and as we look up to the farther reaches of the river we capture the snowy peaks of the Main Divide, reaching Arthurs Pass village in time for lunch (own cost).
We travel through many small townships which service their respective farming communities, and we stop for conveniences and photos throughout our journey. We return via the same route, arriving at Akaroa Wharf at approximately 4.30pm - 5.00pm.
Please note that this is a very long travelling day - approximately 3 hours drive each way, but if you are up to it, we promise you a scenic splendour from rugged alpine vistas, to subalpine lakes, and huge braided rivers.
Tour departs from Akaroa Wharf at 8.30am (or as soon as you can tender to shore), and returns 4.30pm, or at a time suitable to match your cruise ship schedule. Please book an early tender.
