Road to Mt Cook

A day to remember for its stunning scenic contrasts as we travel by road from Christchurch to Mount Cook (5 hours drive, 330 Kms(including stops ), through the rich pastoral farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, the foothills of the Southern Alps from Geraldine to Fairlie, and through the MacKenzie Basin, to Lake Tekapo.  Visit the Church of the Good Shepherd where the turquoise-blue waters contrasted by the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps, and surrounding yellow-tussock farmland, are sure to take your breath away. We drive along the shoreline of  Lake Pukaki, where the Tasman Valley opens into the MacKenzie Basin wtih Mount Cook and the surrounding snow covered peaks in the background, reaching Mount Cook village, and the Hermitage Hotel, in time for lunch (included in cost).
Following lunch, there may be time for you to take a 30 minute hike to view the Tasman Lake and Tasman Glacier, or aternatively, take a flat 30 minute walk to view the Tasman Lake. Please note - we must leave the Mt Cook village area, and start the return journey, by 2.30pm at the latest.
On the return trip, time permitting, we can drive up to the Mt St John observatory, for stunning  panoramic views over the MacKenzie Basin, and Lake Tekapo.
Optional flights that will give breathtaking views of the area are available.  Due to time contraints, flights are only available if you do not opt to view the Tasman Glacier/Lake by foot.  Please see details below

Mini Tasman
See the best of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park including the magnificent Tasman Glacier and Hochstetter Icefall. This flight does not land on the glacier.

Alpine Wonderland
A spectacular overview of both Aoraki Mount Cook and Westland National Parks, including the Fox, Franz Josef and Tasman Glaciers. The best choice for those not wanting to land on the glacier.
Duration: Approx 45 min





Glacier Highlights
Your flight with Mount Cook Ski Planes begins in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. Fly the full length of the Tasman Glacier, passing Aoraki Mount Cook before landing on the Neve' of the Glacier. Once airborne again, the flight home features the spectacular Hochstetter Icefall.  This flight is available via Ski Plane or Helicopter.

Grand Circle
The premier flight ! Fly the full length of the Tasman Glacier, crossing the main divide of the Southern Alps to view the pristine Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. Your Glacier snow landing will be on one of these 3 spectacular Glaciers. Your return flight through this alpine region takes in the majestic Aoraki Mount Cook.This flight is available via Ski Plane or Helicopter.

Your tour includes: your Christchurch accommodation pickup, private comfortable return transport from Christchurch to Mt Cook village, tea or coffee, lunch at the Sir Edmund Hillary Cafe, Hermitage Hotel, Mt Cook, and an informative commentary.
Tour departs Christchurch 7.30am
Returned to your Christchurch accommodation at approximately 7.00pm
